Louis XIII Château near Sens – 40 ha, listed, 700 years in one family

Set at the end of a 500-meter private drive, this elegant château stands on the gentle slope of a park dotted with century-old trees, overlooking a canal that traces the line of the original medieval moat. With its distinctive Louis XIII architecture in brick and stone, the château features a perfectly symmetrical façade centered on an arched doorway crowned by a sculpted pediment and a grand coat of arms with a marquisal coronet, flanked by two imposing round towers.

A grand double staircase, reminiscent of Fontainebleau, leads to the entrance. Inside, a majestic stone staircase with a wide flight and a superb wrought-iron balustrade sets the tone. Midway up the staircase, a striking stained-glass window displays a marquis' coat of arms.

To the right of the entrance hall is a magnificent 90 m² drawing room, bathed in light from eight large windows and enjoying triple exposure to the east, south, and west. Two 19th-century marble fireplaces face each other across the room. Herringbone parquet and a molded ceiling complete the space. Adjacent is a cozy music room.

In the south tower, a charming wood-paneled dining room and a small winter dining room provide intimate entertaining spaces. A beautifully crafted wooden staircase leads to a kitchen. There is also a private oratory.
To the left of the entrance hall: a large salon with dual exposure, four corner double doors, a marble fireplace, and herringbone floors. Another kitchen and a broad hallway connect to further rooms.

A dining room decorated with 18th-century paneling, a period fireplace, and a trumeau mirror adds charm, as does a bedroom with a beautiful en-suite marble bathroom. A recent guest WC in marble. Also on this level: a mezzanine living room and a further room.

On the first floor, the staircase opens onto an 18th-century balcony overlooking the courtyard. Six elegant bedrooms—five with eastern exposure, one facing southwest—offer various historic features:

  • A bedroom with 18th-century paneling, trumeau mirror, fireplace, built-in wardrobe, and bathroom
  • A room with marble fireplace and fine woodwork
  • A bedroom with en-suite bathroom
  • A stunning alcove bedroom with painted trumeau (Virgin teaching Christ), 18th-century décor, fireplace, and bathroom
  • A southwest-facing suite with dressing rooms and bathroom
  • A tower bedroom with marble fireplace and bathroom

The second floor features a large attic beneath a splendid roof framework, two library rooms (one with an 18th-century fireplace, the other 19th-century), and five further bedrooms, including one in the tower.

On the garden level, in one of the towers, is a newly fitted, high-end kitchen featuring an Aga cooker, with access to the tower dining room via a finely crafted independent staircase.

The cellars are equally impressive: a vast 14th-century guardroom with four sandstone pillars from Fontainebleau, vaulted ceilings, a monumental fireplace, three courtyard exits, and several utility rooms. These include a recent Viessmann oil-fired boiler, an office with an 18th-century fireplace, wine cellar, WC, and stone staircase.

The north tower, overlooking the moat, can function independently, with its own boiler room, one room, and a bedroom.

Grounds and Outbuildings:

  • 40-hectare estate: partly wooded parkland, bridle paths, vegetable garden, greenhouse (to be restored), and two separate entrances
  • Charming cottage: new windows and roof, interior restoration needed
  • Caretaker’s house: three bedrooms and a garage
  • Former dovecote: converted into a guest apartment with kitchen, living room, bedroom, woodshed, and outbuildings

Heritage Protection:
The façades and roofs of the château (including both towers, excluding modern additions), as well as those of the dovecote, are protected as Historic Monuments (listed by decree on 13 November 1974).
