Old Houses in Łódź: The Rudolf Keller Manor
ul. Gdańska 49, Łódź
Villa of the factory owner Rudolf Keller in Łódź. Keller was from Prussia and established a textile factory in Łódź at the end of the 19th century, producing mainly decorative elements such as ribbons, cords and laces.
The residential house was built in 1890 by the architect Hilary Majewski in the style of the French Renaissance. Majewski was a sought-after architect in the city at the time and designed numerous industrialist mansions, including the Palace of Izrael Poznański.
The architectural interior was of high quality and parts of it are preserved today, including the representative staircase with wrought-iron vestibule, stained-glass windows and rich stuccoes. However, a fire in 2010 damaged the roof. Since that time, the fabric of the building suffers and the building is secured only makeshift.
The villa, which has been vacant for many years, has been offered for sale several times in recent years. Since 2020, a citizen initiative has been trying to raise public awareness of the architectural monument and to promote the preservation or restoration and new use of the building.
