At the time of the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 19th century, the castle suffered severe damage and as a result was threatened with demolition. However, thanks to the German architect and preservationist Ferdinand von Quast, the castle was rebuilt and has remained almost unchanged to this day. Today's appearance is very close to the original state of the time of construction.
The castle is also known for the stay of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus at the beginning of the 16th century; he was the nephew of Bishop Lukas Watzenrode, who resided at that time.
Most of the parts of the castle worth seeing are open to visitors. In the outer castle there is the 4-star Hotel Krasicki.
Hochschlossof the castle complex - in Lidzbark Warmiński (Burg Heilsberg in East Prussia) belongs to the order castles in northern Poland and was a residence of the bishops of Warmia. The roots of the construction history date back to the middle of the 14th century when the then Bishop John of Meissen selected a hill surrounded by water for the construction of a new castle.
