Castello Nuovo Di Rovasenda, Rovasenda
Castles and villas in Piemonte: Castello Nuovo Di Rovasenda
Rovasenda is a small municipality in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. In the village stands the medieval castle Castello Di Rovasenda, which has its origins already in the 12th century. From the 15th century, the fortified complex served as the noble residence of the Counts of Rovasenda. In 1901, the new Castello Nuovo Di Rovasenda, which can be seen here, was built in the neo-Gothic style by the Turin architect Carlo Nigra, based on the model of the old castle. Nigra was a specialist in the restoration of historic buildings and was involved in the construction of numerous stately homes in Piedmont. He was also a successful photographer. He documented forgotten historical places of the region already towards the end of the 19th century and made efforts to preserve and reconstruct them.
The new castle is located a short distance southeast of the village center in an independent forest. The building is richly decorated inside with numerous paintings and the typical Italian frescoes. It was neglected for many years, but in the meantime it has been renovated for the most part and is used privately.
