Palaces in Lodz Voivodeship: Kaleń

Pałac w Kaleniu, Kaleń

The most beautiful manor houses in Łódź voivodeship

The manor house in the small village of Kaleń in today's Łódź Voivodeship is one of the most beautiful examples of classicist rural residences in historic Mazovia. The manor was purchased at an auction in 1839 by Seweryn Janski, head of the National Credit Institute, who had this representative building erected in place of the smaller old manor house. It was a classicist palace with a portico on a rectangular layout, the symmetrical character of which was later lost due to various reconstructions. Thus, a three-story tower addition was built on the northwest side and a terrace addition with semicircular risalite on the south side.

For almost 50 years the manor was owned by the Janski family - after that the owners changed frequently, including well-known Polish names such as Lubomirska or Okęcki. After 1945, the manor house served, among other things, as a kindergarten, while the estate became a state farm. The interior has been simplified by repeated renovations in recent decades. Today, the manor house, together with the park, once again forms a harmonious whole. In 2018, the property was under marketing.

Tip: The Polish writer Kazimierz Brandys chose the mansion in Kaleń and the surrounding area as the setting for his novel Antygona, which, however, is hardly known outside of Poland and was published only in Polish language.
