Rudolstadt: Villa of the toy manufacturer Adolf Richter
Schwarzburger Chaussee 74, 07407 Rudolstadt
Castle-like villa in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, dating from 1886
The mansion located in Schwarzburger Chaussee in Rudolstadt is a symbol of the success of Adolf Richter who became an important entrepreneur and court supplier with the production of architectural construction kits. The Anker brick building set is an educationally oriented architectural toy. A 1908 advertisement states:"When all other games have been put in the corner, the Anker brick-building set not only continues to be used diligently, but the children can't wait until they get the next addition to be able to build even bigger and more beautiful buildings" :)
Side note: Richter did not invent these building blocks himself, but bought them from the original inventors Gustav and Otto Lilienthal, who had not succeeded in marketing them. It was not until Richter took over the company that the toy became a worldwide classic and was not missing in any children's room of the noble society. The success of the construction set later triggered a legal dispute with the inventors, which was decided in Richter's favor.
The villa was refurbished and houses company premises.
By the way, Anker brick building sets are still produced today: https://anker-bausteine.de/
