The Gutenberg Mansion
Piotrkowska 86, Łódź
Undoubtedly the most striking building in downtown Łódź (
ul.Piotrkowska 86) is the so-called Gutenberg House by Johann Petersilge: the eclectic facade shows a wild mix of various neo styles as well as Art Nouveau. Johann Petersilge, publisher and founder of the Lodz newspaper commissioned the construction of the ornate publishing house by architects Kazimierz Pomian-Sokołowski and Franciszek Chełmiński at the end of the 19th century.
The main elements of the facade are four decorative metal dragons and Petersilge's tribute to Johannes Gutenberg in the form of a statue in the bay window together with a total of six portraits in relief of the inventor of letterpress printing.
