Baroque Palace in Groß Rietz
Nebenstraße 2, 15848 Groß Rietz
Groß Rietz castle is one of the outstanding Baroque buildings by Cornelis Ryckwaert. The Dutch master builder was a sought-after court architect in Brandenburg and Anhalt in the 17th century.
Court marshal Hans Georg von der Marwitz commissioned the construction of the Baroque palace in 1693. The two-story building stands on a high basement and is closed by a steep hipped roof with two dwarf houses. The facade is emphasized by decorative pilasters. On the courtyard and park side there are open staircases.
In the 1990s, the non-profit "Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH" took over the property and forced the restoration of the valuable cultural monument. Despite its run-down condition, the baroque interior architecture was essentially preserved. The original stuccowork in the salons and the representative entrance hall with three-armed oak staircase are considered remarkable. In 2020, the long-time tenant acquired the castle from the company. Today (2022), the castle and park present themselves again in a largely original condition.
Groß Rietz, by the way, was Ryckwaert's last project. Previously, he had also designed the castle in Coswig and Oranienbaum Castle.
