Baroque castle in Hořín
The castle in Hořín is a stately three-wing baroque chateau in the district of Mělník in Central Bohemia (Středočeském kraj). It was built in 1696 for Heřman Jakub Černín, chief burgrave of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The architect was Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, a native of northern Italy and one of the most sought-after builders in the 17th century. He was best known for his opulent Baroque buildings in Prague. In addition, he designed other country castles in Bohemia, including the famous castle in Liblice, which today houses a hotel.
In addition to the former hunting residence, the property includes a landscaped park covering more than 10 hectares, as well as various outbuildings, some of which are now preserved only as ruins.
From 1736, the palace was extended by side wings, corner pavilions and outbuildings arranged parallel to the palace. In the eastern pavilion a castle chapel with a painted ceiling was erected. It extends over both floors and is dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk. Many interior rooms have vaulted ceilings with elaborate stucco work and paintings, some of which are well preserved and considered artistically valuable.
After the political change, the property was returned to the descendants of the last owners, in whose possession it still is today. In 2013, the construction of a residential complex was planned. However, the project, which was budgeted at the equivalent of 30 million euros, did not get beyond the planning stage. Instead, Hořín Castle has been offered for sale for quite some time. As of February 2023, negotiations are still underway with several prospective buyers.
Zámek Hořín was the location of several TV productions, among others it is featured in the film All Quiet on the Western Front (2022).
