Castle in Montmort-Lucy: Château de Montmort
Château de Montmort, Montmort-Lucy
The municipality of Montmort-Lucy is located just under 20 km southwest of Épernay in the Champagne region. On a hill rises the stately Renaissance castle Château de Montmort, whose mighty silhouette inspired famous French poets such as Victor Hugo. The size and construction of the brick building with ramparts, moats and drawbridge still show traces of a medieval fortress, which became the model for the reconstruction in the 16th century. Today the castle is a three-story building on a square ground plan with four corner towers. In the 19th century, the gatehouse with the brick towers visible here was built.
Château de Montmort with its completely preserved interiors is one of the most outstanding country castles in the Champagne region. In the past, tours were possible from time to time, but in 2022 it is no longer open to the public and is inhabited by the descendants of the Montmort family.
The online database of French cultural monuments Base Mérimée has a comprehensive documentation of the castle.
