Old Mansions at Lake Como: Villa Bonacossa
Via Attilio Pirotta, 22034 Brunate
The municipality of Brunate, northwest of the city of Como above the lake of the same name, is known for its numerous extraordinary villas, most of which were built around the turn of the century and are spread throughout the community.
Villa Pirotta Bonacossa in Via Attilio Pirotta is certainly one of the most striking buildings from this period. It was built in 1902 for the cotton manufacturer Attilio Pirotta and is considered the most eccentric work of the architect Federico Frigerio, who also designed other villas in that area. The building extends on the hillside over two levels, each with an entrance. The interior is dominated by richly decorated rooms with neo-rococo style paintings, restored a few years ago to the high standards of Italian craftsmanship.
Particularly noteworthy is the park-like garden, which extends in terraces towards the lake and covers an area of over 10 hectares. As usual for the residences on Lake Como, the garden was richly planted with partly exotic plants. A very special characteristic arises from the very steep slope - the natural rocks and grottoes were tastefully integrated into the paths lined with various sculptures, revealing an enchanting and mystical charm.
