Natalia, Marina, Basile - Three old mansions in Stresa

Via Duchessa di Genova, 28838 Stresa

Anyone who takes this driveway in the center of the Italian spa town of Stresa at Lake Maggiore has probably found the town's most remarkable backyard. What makes the people exiting the car viewing around?

No less than three old ghost houses frame the numerous vehicles, some of which are parked crosswise, and many a person wonders whether their car is safe here. They have found their way here on instruction, because the former stately property now serves as a parking lot for the hotel "La Palma" across the street.

The spacious buildings overlooking the lake, barely visible in the summer months, are a legacy of Carlo Emanuele Basile, member of the noble Sicilian Basile family, writer, lawyer, PNF politician and then mayor of the city. For more than forty years, the villas, where Hemingway and Mussolini once enjoyed being guests, have stood empty - in a prime location on Stresa's promenade and in the immediate vicinity of the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées.

Several times, the hotel's operating family, as owners of the property, planned the construction of a second hotel complex including the two listed villas "Basile" (in the cover picture) and "Marina". More than 30 million euros were to be invested and 80 jobs created. To date, none of the previous variants has been approved by the authorities because they did not meet the requirements for the preservation of historical monuments.

A situation that is not only more common in Italy. When it comes to the question of embedding landmarked properties in new projects, especially in places with a high relevance for tourism, a dialog between different interest groups is unfortunately often not possible - or only after many years.

Carlo Emanuele Basile, by the way, grew up in Villa Carlotta; it is buried under the current site of the hotel. Whether one or the other of the three remaining ladies will also take an early place there - it doesn't look like it in 2022, but the last negotiations have certainly not yet been held.
